Whitton United 5  v  0 Felixstowe & Walton

First pre-season friendly for the new 2018/19 season

It wasn’t the most enjoyable pre-season friendly match to watch if we go by the 5-0 scoreline, but with rolling substitutions and a change of formation mid-way through the game this was an opportunity for everyone to learn a number of lessons as we approach the start of the season.

For the Seasiders, it was good to see Jordy Matthews back in the starting line up and also exciting to see debuts for Jack Spurling, Jack Ainsley and Joe Bloomfield. Also in the squad was Ben Frost, new to the reserves, who came on as a second-half substitute. For Whitton, we saw four former Seasiders turning out, with Regan Pelling, Nick Ingram, Stefano Mallardo and Craig Jennings all in the green and white.

Unfortunately, it was a cross from Pelling that led to Liam Wales putting Whitton one up and just two minutes later Nick Ingram converted from the spot. Felixstowe went in three down at half time following Kevin Inglis netting from the left. Ingram could have had a brace when he hit the post later on.

There were a number of substitutions in the second half and a switch in formation saw some improvement from Felixstowe despite goals number four and five going in from Jay Cole and Liam Wales early in the half.

The team and coaches will no doubt approach Tuesday’s fixture away to Newmarket very much hoping to come away with a different scoreline from the one witnessed today.

Spurling, Hastings, S. Ainsley, Boardley, Barber, Davis, Reel, Kerridge, J. Ainsley, Matthews,Powell. Subs: Ford, Clarke,Bloomfield, Frost.
