Velocity (Isthmian League) Trophy- Group Stage

Introducing the Velocity Trophy

The former Isthmian League knockout competition has had a revamp this season with the format changed to include a group stage.

All the Step 4 sides have been placed into one of 10 regionalised groups - with each group winner progressing to the knockout stages where they will join the Premier Division clubs to form the last 32, which will revert to the usual knockout format.

The Seasiders have been placed in a group with Coggeshall Town, AFC Sudbury, Maldon & Tiptree, Heybridge Swifts and Bury Town. The sides will play each other once either home or away, with the Seasiders handed home ties against Maldon & Tiptree (24/09) and Heybridge (22/10. Away ties are scheduled at AFC Sudbury (1/10) and Coggeshall (5/11) in addition to the opening match at Bury Town.

There will be no extra time in the group stages in the event of a drawn match - each club will pick up one point and progress to a penalty shoot out, with the winners of that picking up a second point.

Each club will also be able to name 5 substitutes and use them all.

Form Guide

It's been a difficult opening few weeks for the Seasiders with 3 league defeats in addition to the FA Cup exit at AFC Sudbury. A 1-0 win in the league at Sudbury a fortnight ago was a welcome 3 points and keeps the side one place above the bottom two - Brentwood and Romford who are yet to register a point after 4 games.

For Bury, it's a different picture entirely with the Blues sitting in 2nd place behind Maldon & Tiptree on 10 points from their opening 4 games. An opening day 3-1 win at home to Basildon was followed by a 1-1 draw at Witham. Another 3-1 home win, this time over league new-boys Cambridge City and Saturdays fine 2-0 win at Canvey Island means the home side will be in confident mood going into this Velocity Trophy tie. The only down side for the Blues so far has been their own exit from the FA Cup, Histon coming away from West Suffolk with a 2-1 victory to move into the First Qualifying Round.

If you travel from the A14, leave at junction 43 signposted to central Bury St Edmunds. Once clear of the exit roundabout, follow the signs to Town Centre. Take the first exit at the next roundabout (after 300 yards) into Northgate Street. At the second set of traffic lights (T-Junction), turn left into Mustow Street and first left into Cotton Lane, past the Hawkes garage and the Drive Car showroom. Carry on down to the bottom of Cotton Lane and turn right into the council car park. The ground is at the far end of the car park, situated on the left hand side.

The Denny Bros Stadium boasts cover on all 4 sides, including the rather quirky seated main stand. The clubhouse has been recently refurbished and going by previous visits,  food and refreshments are available.
